Independent Custody Visitors
The Office of the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner employs volunteers from all walks of life to become Independent Custody Visitors.
Custody Visitors are people drawn from local communities who, as part of a team, carry out unannounced visits to police custody suites in their areas to check and report on the welfare of people being held there.
Visitors check on conditions in custody, speak to detainees and follow up any concerns they raise about their welfare.
The figures below show the number of unannounced visits to the custody suites in Humberside:
ICV Data October - December 2018
|| Total number of detainees through custody

The Custody Visiting scheme is totally independent of the police and anyone over 18 years old who lives in the Humberside Police area can apply to become a visitor, providing they are not already employed by, or a close relative of anyone employed by the police, the PCC’s office, magistrates or solicitors. Out of pocket expenses are paid and full training is provided.
We welcome Independent Custody Visitors from all backgrounds. ICV's in Leicestershire have helped to develop a video talking about the importance of diversity in custody visiting. Please watch the video below to find out more.
