A key figure in the battle against rural crime has received a commendation from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside.

Shiptonthorpe farmer David Horsley is the co-ordinator for farm watch group Vale Watch, which helps to oversee the Vale of York area of the East Riding. He also chairs Humberside Police’s Rural Advisory Group.

David established Vale Watch in 2022 and has since grown the group to include 230 members along with more than 30 officers from Humberside Police.

Messages are shared by members to share intelligence, report incidents and provide support, which has ultimately led to successful prosecutions and a lowering of crime in the area.

Deputy Commissioner Leo Hammond surprised David with the commendation at his farm during Rural Crime Action Week.

“Vale Watch has really improved confidence in the police locally and, more importantly, people are more prepared to report because they know the reports are seen by officers and things will happen off the back of it,” David said.

“People like to see that the reports they make are turned into real tangible results.

“It’s very satisfying. In the last four years the volume of rural crime in this area has been down massively. All we can do is keep safe the area we look after.”

David was nominated for the commendation by Humberside Police sergeant Kevin Jones of the Rural Task Force. The submission included: “Despite not being a police officer or staff member, David dedicates countless hours of his own time to support Vale Watch members and the effective operation of the Rural Advisory Group.

“David’s leadership has transformed the way rural communities engage with policing. His efforts have reduced fear of crime, increased public confidence, and made Humberside a more hostile environment for rural offenders.

“He is widely regarded as a true advocate for rural policing and a valued member of the extended police family.”
