Commissioner announces partnership with local football clubs to help tackle Domestic Abuse

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Humberside has
refreshed its ongoing media campaign aimed at preventing domestic abuse by
partnering with three local football clubs.

In partnership with Hull City AFC, Grimsby Town FC and Scunthorpe United FC, the messages within the stadiums target those who commit domestic abuse to encourage them to face up to their actions and seek help to change, whilst also providing routes to support for those affected by abusive behaviour. In addition to this, the messaging includes encouragement to be an active bystander and call out inappropriate behaviours. This campaign is jointly run with the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership.

Police and Crime Commissioner and Chair of the Humber Violence Prevention
Partnership Jonathan Evison said “There is no place for violence in our communities, we take domestic abuse seriously and recognise that the harm caused affects people of all ages and from all sectors of society. Any violence within the home always harms children and there is never an excuse for abuse.

“We are delighted to be working in collaboration with our local football clubs to raise awareness of Domestic Abuse and encourage more open conversations about harm within the home. Support services are ready to help those who need to change their harmful behaviours to get help to stop causing harm. Local support is also available for anyone experiencing hurt at home – please remember you are not alone, and help is available.”

The Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner has also been accredited by the White Ribbon Campaign for the past four years; White Ribbon are the leading charity in England and Wales engaging men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls. It is hoped that by highlighting these issues more organisations across our region will sign up to the White Ribbon campaign and pledge their support to prevent violence and abuse.

Claire Burton, Partnerships and Hospitality Manger at Hull City commented “As a club committed to the well-being of our community, Hull City Football Club recognises the devastating impact that domestic abuse has on individuals and families. We are proud to support initiatives that raise awareness of domestic abuse and provide support to those affected. We will continue to work closely with local organisations and take a stand against all forms of abuse.

Glyn Sparks, Head of Partnerships at Scunthorpe United said “It is great to work with the local community and help spread awareness where and when we can. We are always looking at showing support and this gives us the chance to do this to thousands of people regularly at The Attis Arena.”

A Spokesperson for Grimsby Town said “As a community club we feel the importance of backing campaigns like this, hopefully it will raise awareness, and will start people talking so they don’t suffer in silence.”
