Ask For Angela audit reports 100 per cent success rate

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside (OPCC) thanks the venues of North Lincolnshire for helping to make the night-time economy safer for all.

North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP) has reported a 100 per cent success rate from a recent Ask for Angela audit, which tested venues in Scunthorpe and Brigg on their knowledge of the scheme.

Ask for Angela allows people who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened in pubs and other venues to discreetly ask for help simply by approaching a member of staff and asking for ‘Angela.’

Rolled out across partner venues since 2022, staff are trained in how to handle such situations and remove the impacted person as quickly as possible with little fuss which could involve taking them to a safe space, calling them a taxi or contacting the emergency services.

A recent ‘mystery shopper’ audit saw nine venues tested with each one responding correctly to a request for Angela. All also displayed the scheme’s posters in toilets in order to make customers aware of the help on offer.

Feedback said the venues demonstrated strong staff awareness and confidence along with consistent delivery of safe exit strategies.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside Jonathan Evison said: “It is pleasing to see the Ask for Angela scheme being used effectively across area to help keep people safe.

“There are many situations in which people can very quickly feel vulnerable, so it is heartening to know that staff in night-time venues are well-equipped to help when asked.

“I congratulate the venues visited for the results of the audit. Keep up the excellent work.”

The OPCC is a member of the North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership – along with North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Ongo, the National Probation Service, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board – which works to build safer communities and reduce crime in the area.

The CSP created the Safer Nights NL charter, a project funded by the OPCC, which is a pledge to show venues are proactive in improving the safety of staff and public alike.
